Aukana Buddha is a masterpiece created in the 5th century AD during the Anuradhapura kingdom reign of King Datusena. 12m higher Buddha statue result of skilled sculptor and his student competing to carve a statue of the Buddha; the teacher carved Aukana Buddha, he won, and his student’s unfinished statue its known as a Resvehera.
The Buddha is depicted in the Abhaya Mudra, with his right hand raised in a gesture of boldness and affirmation. One of the tallest and most magnificent ancient Buddha statues in Sri Lanka, representing the pinnacle of ancient artistry.
