The Elephant Pond situated 50m from refectory in the Abayagiri monastery complex near Lankaramaya in Anuradhapura. This man – made massive rectangular tank measures 159m in length, 52.7m width, and 9.5m depth, with water capacity of 75,000 cubic meters.
It was six time bigger than an Olympic swimming pool.
Source of the pond is the Periyakulama tank and Bandaramaha kulama tank network of the underground canals. This ancient irrigation system in underground still working. The massive Eth Pokuna is believed have been used by resident Buddhist monks in the Abayagiri Monastery.
