The great Chronicle Mahavansa says that King Dutugemunu built Mirisawetiya to celebrate his victory over Indian king Elara in 02nd century BC. It situates in Anuradhapura.  Mirisawetiya is one of the eight sacred places in Anuradhapura. This is small monastic complex situated to the west of city. The complex located to the south of Basawakkulama Weva and north of Tisa Weva.

It was restored in the 20th century, standing around 59m tall. Total extent on this land is about 50 acres.

Legend History.

King stuck his spear on the bank when he went to bathe in Tisa Weva.

The spear contained relics of the Buddha and had given him good luck in battle.

King was unable to remove the spear after the day of swimming.

Then he remembered that he had eaten a curry of chilly without offering to the monks.

In order to atone for this, he decided to build a Dagaba enshrining the spear.

Completed within three years and it was the largest stupa at that time.
