This was the first ever stupa in this island since the introduction of Buddhism in
3гd century BC. Build by king Devanampia Tissa. The present stupa shape known as a Bell shape. Contains the sacred right collarbone of the Buddha, a highly revered relic.
Thuparama is so called as it comprises a Stupa and an Aramic Complex or Monastery. Even today the ruins of this complex cover an area of nearly 3.5 acres.
The original construction was in the shape of a mound of grain. In this monastic complex, one can see a hospital, Tooth Relic temple and an image house which is only available in Mahavihara premises.
The stone pillars around the stupa give the idea that there was a roof over the ‘Stupa’. The pillar capitals are unique constructions because of the intricate carvings.
Cholas plundered the entire temple at the end of 10th century AD. It was King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century AD, who restored the stupa and Thupa ghara.
The present Dagaba is on a circular platform of 50m in diameter rising 3.5m
in height.
The renovation of the present stupa was completed in the year 1862.
At present, the height of Dagaba is 19m and diameter is 18m.
